AUSTRALIAN
MAGIC CONVENTIONS
Every
two years the Australian Magic Community gets together in
Sydney or Melbourne for the Australian Magic Convention.
The
first ever was on October 18, 1952 in Melbourne and was
attended by Les Levante.
(The
second National Convention was held in Sydney 1953, then
Melbourne 1954, Sydney 1955, Melbourne 1956... but by then
the pressure of organising a National Convention every year
had become too great and it was changed to every second
year).
The
first convention Tim attended was the 16th Australian
Convention at the Glenview Hotel, St Leonards in Sydney with
special international guests David Nixon and Ali
Bongo from the UK. Tim competed in the 'Quick Trick'
competition and, together with his friend Mark Glassborow,
presented an underwater escape in the freezing water of the
hotel swimming pool.
The
17th Australian Convention was held at the Southern Cross
Hotel in Melbourne, and Tim was awarded 'Teenage Champion
Magician of Australia' for his pun-filled presentation
of the classic 'Fresh Fish Sold Here Today'. The special
international guests were Mark Wilson and 'The
Professor' Dai Vernon from the USA.
In
1982 the Convention was back in Sydney at the Shore Motor
Inn, Artarmon. The guests were
Dick and Diana Zimmerman.
1984
saw the Convention back in Melbourne at the Regent Hotel,
but unfortunately Tim was touring the top of Australia in
the Star Magic Show and was again unable to attend. Special
international guests were Karrell Fox, Jack Mayes,
and Rovi.
The
20th Australian Convention was in 1986 and held at the
Gazebo Hotel in Sydney, special international guests were
John Kennedy, Pat Page, Hank Moorehouse, Micky
Hades, Rovi, and Johnny Geddes. Tim Ellis won the award for 'Best Trick' and
was declared 'Best Close Up Magician in Australia'.
Tim performed as a special guest artist on the stage show.
In
1988 the Convention was held at the Melbourne Townhouse
hotel with guests Terry Seabrooke and Petrick &
Mia.
1990
the 22nd Convention was in Sydney. The special international
guests were Trevor Lewis and Dale Salwak Tim
won 'Best Trick' for his Kruger Kard Stab and was awarded 'Best
Stage Magician in Australia'. Tim also performed as a
special guest artist on the Stage magic show.
In
1992 Tim ended up on the organising committee of the
Convention and moved the event to Melbourne's brand new
World Convention Centre.International guests were Mac
King, Alan Shaxon and Max Maven. This event set a
new record for registrants. Tim also performed as a guest
artist on the Close Up and Stage Magic shows.
1994
in Sydney at the Boulevard Hotel. International guests
Daryl, Rovi, Chuck Fayne and Mike Close. Tim
performed as a guest artist in the Close Up and Stage Magic
shows.
1996
and Tim was the Convention Chairman. Seeking to top the
success of 1994 he returned to the World Congress Centre and
brought out Tom Ogden, Ali Bongo, Bob Sheets and
Tommy Wonder. The attendance was almost double of that
in 1992.
1998
at the Riverside Theatre, Paramatta. Special guests were
Doc Eason and Gene Anderson. Sue-Anne Webster
was given a special award for her 'Haunted Mansion'
stage act. Tim Ellis performed a special Midnight Magic show
as well as performing as a guest artist in the Close Up and
Stage Magic shows.
2000
Tim & Sue-Anne were touring overseas at the time and were
unable to attend. It was staged at the World Congress Centre
and the international guests were Rene Lavand and
Tina Lenert.
2002
at the Riverside Theatre. Special international guests were
Lennart Green, David Malek and Magic Christian.
Tim and Sue-Anne performed as special guest artists on
both the Close Up and Stage Magic shows.
2004
Tim once again returned to the organising role at this
convention. He took the event to The Centre Ivanhoe and
completely revamped the way it was staged. International
guests were Henry Evans, Aldo Colombini, Pablo Kusnetzoff,
Norbert Ferre and Lee Eun-Gyeol. It was at this
convention that Sue-Anne Webster was voted 'Best Stage
Magic Act in Australia' by her peers for her 'I Dream of
Jeannie' tribute act. Tim and Sue-Anne also compered the
International Stage Magic Show and Sue-Anne performed as a
guest artist on the Close Up Magic show. |
